Standards
Learning about Standards helps you understand that there are documents, established by consensus and approved by a recognized body, that provides, for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in each context. It is also important to note that Standards should be based on the consolidated results of science, technology, and experience, and aimed at the promotion of optimum community benefits.
Standards are of different types, i.e. ISO, EN, BS, PAS, Private Standards and, Corporate Technical Standards.
Now all these standards go through a process in order to be
standardized. For when there is a proposal for new work, the project must be
accepted to go through, the drafting is done, followed by a public comment that
is then after approved and is publicized. Finally, there is a review.
In spite of that, standards are commonly portrayed as an
inhibitor of innovation in the sense that a person may have an idea that could
not made possible because they may not meet the required standard. However,
standards can be used effectively to in fact come up with innovative ideas. For
example, if a new product is entirely designed from scratch, it means there is
a chance for new standards to arise. Alternatively, the already proposed idea
could be added something unique based off a standard.
Below is how standards may be used to design and engineer
innovation:
